Traditional Japanese jacket in purplish color, made with Shibori technique.
Symbolism of purple in Japan
Nobility and prestige: For centuries, purple was the color of the imperial family and the highest aristocratic classes. During the Asuka period, the "Twelve Cap Rank System" prohibited common people from wearing it (Kin-jiki, forbidden color).
Refinement and intellect: It represents supreme elegance (Miyabi), deep spirituality, and respect. In Japanese Buddhism, it is the hue reserved for the highest-ranking monks.
Bonds and eternal love: Purple was historically obtained from the root of the Murasaki-so plant. Because the roots grow intricately in the ground, classical literature (such as the Genji Monogatari) associates this color with indissoluble emotional bonds, steadfastness, and fidelity.
Seasonality and maturity: In the context of kimonos and Michiyuki, a purple hue (especially if dark or desaturated) indicates refined elegance suitable for adult women, perfect for colder seasons like autumn and winter.
Fabric and texture: It is made of silk and decorated with the precious Shibori (絞り) resist dyeing technique, which creates a characteristic three-dimensional, crinkled, and finely wrinkled surface to the touch.
