Michiyuki Vintage

Michiyuki Vintage

The geometric rhombus pattern (Bishi) on this deep red Michiyuki, visible in the fabric, is called Bishi (or Hishi).
  • Natural Origin: It graphically represents the leaves of the water chestnut (hishi), a very resilient aquatic plant.
  • Meaning: It symbolizes prosperity, good health, and continuity of lineage. The plant's ability to reproduce quickly makes it an omen of fertility and uninterrupted growth.

Rinzu (Jacquard) weaving creates a contrast between shiny and matte areas that changes with the light. Traditionally, shiny Rinzu silk is historically associated with formal and elegant garments, indicating nobility and refinement.
The Symbolism of the Red Color:

The background color amplifies the meaning of the pattern. In Japan, red (Aka) is a sacred and powerful shade:

It represents the energy of the sun, life, and fire.

It has a strong apotropaic function, acting as a shield to ward off evil spirits, bad luck, and illness.

The inner lining:

The fan is not just an accessory, but one of the most positive symbols in Japanese culture.
  • Main meaning: Represents prosperity and a bright future.
  • Symbolic shape: The shape that expands from the central pivot outwards symbolizes an opening path, indicating a life that becomes increasingly rich in happiness and success. For this reason, it also takes the auspicious name Suehiro (meaning "spreading towards the end").
Flowers within the Weave
If you look inside and around the fan's outline, you'll notice small five-petal flowers.
  • Cherry Blossoms (Sakura): Symbolize rebirth, spring, and the ephemeral beauty of life.
  • Plum Blossoms (Ume): If the petals are perfectly round, they indicate the plum, a symbol of resilience and spiritual strength, as it is the first flower to bloom, overcoming the winter frost.
