Japanese Yukata
Japanese Yukata
The decorative patterns (called monyō) printed on this yukata combine classic elements of traditional Japanese culture and art.
Female faces and fans (Ukiyo-e)
The white panels with profile faces and fans directly reference Ukiyo-e art prints from the Edo period, particularly the Bijin-ga genre (portraits of beautiful women).
- Meaning: They represent the idealization of grace, refinement, and feminine charm of the era.
- The fan (Sensu): Besides being a practical object for cooling down in summer, it symbolizes prosperity and good fortune. Its outward-expanding shape evokes a life path opening towards a bright future.
The constellation of small flowers (Sakura)
The small white five-petaled flowers covering the blue background are the famous cherry blossoms (sakura).
- Meaning: In Japanese tradition, cherry blossoms represent rebirth, spring, and the ephemeral beauty of life (mono no aware). Although they bloom in spring, their motif is used year-round on fabrics as an auspicious symbol of good fortune and freshness.
The sinuous waves (Seigaiha stylized or Kanzeon)
The geometric dotted paths snaking among the flowers recall the movement of water flows and sea waves.
- Meaning: Flowing water symbolizes continuity, resilience, and purification. In the summer months, water-related motifs (rivers, waves, or drops) are specifically chosen on clothing to visually evoke a psychological feeling of coolness and relief from the heat.
