Characteristics of Chirimen Processing
This ancient technique, originating from the Tango peninsula in Kyoto prefecture, is distinguished by several elements:
- Weaving and Twisting: It is produced by tightly twisting the weft threads (horizontal) during weaving. The threads have alternating twists (S and Z), which create a natural elasticity and bounce.
- "Shibo" Texture: The result is a surface characterized by tiny waves or ripples called shibo. This processing makes the fabric slightly rough to the touch but very durable and soft.
- Practical Advantages: Thanks to its irregular structure, Chirimen is almost wrinkle-resistant, dries quickly, and does not stick to the skin during hot seasons.
