Kasuri Kimono
Kasuri Kimono
The fabric of this kimono is a classic Kasuri.
- The Technique: Warp and weft threads are hand-dyed with knots before weaving (ikat). The geometric design emerges from the precise intertwining of these pre-dyed threads.
- The blurred effect: The typical slightly "vibrating" or blurred white outline of the designs is the hallmark of authentic Kasuri. The most famous variations with this dark indigo base are the Kurume Kasuri.
Symbolism of the Designs
The abstract geometric patterns alternating with touches of color embody meanings related to spiritual protection and rural life:
- The Torii gates (鳥居): The stylized arched white geometric shapes abstractly recall the Torii, the sacred Shinto gate that separates the profane world from the spiritual one. They symbolize protection, purification, and connection to the divine.
- The lattice pattern (Igeta / 井桁): The hashtag-shaped symbols (#) represent the wooden partition that protected the mouth of water wells. It is a powerful wish for good health, home safety, and abundance of resources.
- The central red dot: The red geometric rhombus or knot ignites the fabric, symbolizing vital energy, longevity, and acts as an amulet against misfortune.
